Art with code

This exploration will be dedicated to Joshua Davis who uses fractal-based software to create art.
Born in San Diego in 1971 Davis was introduced to the internet in the mid 1990's by a design student friend at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where he studied illustration and art history. Self tought he worked in illustrations by day and HTML by night. He began with Future Splash Animator then by Flash 4 they had added scripting. At this time he was already familiar with JavaScript and DHTML. During the dotcom era David was a major force in web design. Now he had a combination of vector based design tool and programming.

Because Flash vector based work allows him to scale any size he can create work using illustrator  vectors and dump them into Flash and then output in Post Script. He uses patterns of motion based on natural, semi random process for his current programs.
" The most complex print I've done had 120,000 layers in illustrator. The printer called and said 'How did you do this? How long did it take? And I said 'Oh five minutes"
The complexity of his compositions creates problems for printers causing them to crash when they try to separate CMYK on a file with thousands of layers, which excites him.
His inspirations come from life observations. The relationship of things in life. He works in a free flowing consciousness where he does not sketch the idea but begins exploring right away. He can create many things making mistakes to come up with one good idea.

Today Joshua Davis travels for conferences, has produced  work and collaborated with many companies like BMW, Kanye West, Motorola, AMP Energy, Nike, Sony, Volkswagen, Toyota...and much more.

Because Clicking is so 90's!

I was looking around on the Webby Awards website, when the website Because Clicking is So 90's caught my eye.  This flash-based website (created by Andreas Lutz) is innovative in that you can navigate through it without ever touching your computer.  That's right, Because Clicking is So 90's uses your webcam and microphone to track your hand onscreen and you can bring up menu options by speaking into your microphone.  The "menu," for want of a better term, is also something of a music game, creating tones as you move your hands around and drag things to various ports.  All in all, a very interesting and fun sight.  Lutz has done other work, notably Fairgrounds Night, a music video with Augmented Reality tie-ins.

Immersive Garden

I was searching through the Webby's award page and I found this site, Immersive Garden.  It belongs to a Multimedia artist name Dilshan Arukatti.  The title of the site grabbed me and I was happy to discovered a really inspiring site.  This is the type of site I look at and say, "I want to do that!".  Dilsan's personal site is amazing on its own right.  I really enjoyed the illumination effect from the single point of light along with the profound aphorisms.  The following animations of flowering plants and other media is equally mind-blowing.  The portfolio area is impressive and even skimming through you can see an amazing body of work.  It is a very energizing site and I am happy to have found it.

Peeps

Here's an interactive flash piece from the Peeps website. You can play around with it and go to different places to learn stuff or view pictures or watch videos. Also you can get recipes and other stuff to do. It can freeze your browser so be a little careful.

I make my case

Check it out!
Ok... So I burned a good hour playing around with this site. There are so many different options! Basically its a flash run page that allows you to create a case for your phone, using a number of different artists, shapes, patterns and colors.  I really enjoyed the flash on the first page that takes off wherever you move to mouse. It really makes you want to buy a 40 dollar case without even looking at the actual case!

Bunnykill

Bunnykill is a flash animation about a bunny that fights other bunnies. The animations are graphic and have a lot of blood so don't watch them if you get offended by that stuff. There are more than one of them so if you want to watch them google "bunnykill". Quote from description: "This cute little bunny rabbit with a samurai sword slashes through other bunnies in some kind of fairy tale-like forest."

Artist/ Portfolio Exploration: C.J. Yeh

My Mondrian based on my data.

myData=myMondrian is an interactive digital art piece developed by fine artist, CJ Yeh, where the final outcome is a printable work of art made to look like a painting by Piet Mondrian, but is created using the user's data.

CJ Yeh's piece was originally an interactive installation piece at the Queen Museum of Art (2004). Gallery goers were asked to type some personal information into a computer, the software then created a Mondrian like image based on the person's data. These personalized Mondrian-eque compositions were then printed out and placed on the gallery walls.

myData=myMondrian is not the only digital art piece inspired by a famous fine artist. His other digital work makes "reproductions" of Jackson Pollock  , Philip Glass, Chuck Close , and Rene Magritte's work. myData=myMondrian, as well as the other fun interactive computer programs are found on CJ Yeh's website under the Digital Art link.

His website is also a great example of how flash can be used to navigate an artist's portfolio, you can use a navigator or links to browse around CJ's page. I would use the navigation, it seems to take you to pages not accessible through the links. Check out TypoGraffiti with the virtual navigator (it's to the far left, by Times Square and Penn Station), you also  might want to click the small circle between the links bar.

Artist Exploration - Fredo Viola

Freda Viola is a multimedia artist and musician. His site, theturn.tv, has a toy-like interface that invites exploration and play. The interface itself is an instrument that you can spin and throw around to make music...

Hello Sour Sally is a fun, interactive game-like experience for a yogurt in Jakarta, Indonesia. I was attracted to hand-drawn illustrated style and fun way to navigate the content.

Wonder Wall

Wonder wall is a web site for an interior design firm that is based in Japan. Masamichi Katayamais the founder of this firm and the firm is known for it’s ability to break boundaries associated with design. The firm has won accolades including 'Interior Design Firm of the Year' through The Great Indoors Award.
The web site for this company also breaks conventional design boundaries. The site has a store front, downloadable screen savers, dual language support and a google map with the locations of notable projects displayed. I noticed that many items in the online store were sold out, this indicates to me that people like the merchandise.
The homepage of the web site is built with photographs from stores, offices, galleries, malls and products in a way that is interesting and interactive. When a user mouses over the images the grid becomes three-dimensional and the item that the user is hovering over is enlarged in a non-symmetrical way.

Clicking on the imagery brings up a colorful page with cool animated effects and a showcase of imagery highlighting their wonderful work.

Sexperience

This is an interesting site I found called Sexperience. Its a Flash based web survey that started in the UK and basically asks you questions about your sexual life and depicts the overall results of the current poll though different graphs made up of the little figures that all run onto screen and animate into place to give you an idea of whats the norm for people across the board. There are options to break up the data in all different ways to hone in on a specific demographics contribution to the stats. Its just an interesting site that gives you an idea of what the normal sexual experiences and preferences are for most people. God knows what the action script must look like for a site like this.
