Today I would like to take a look at the web site Polar Bear Plunge which was the FWA site of the day on July 11, 2010. This site was designed by RED Interactive Agency. RED agency has a great wealth of technical and graphic staff and produces award winning web sites.
I like polarbearplunge.sandiegozoo.org/because I love Polar Bears and the San Diego Zoo. Red does a nice job of helping to educate people about the challenges facing polar bears by providing several ways for readers to engage with Polar bears.
Users can adopt a polar bear, learn about carbon footprints, play games online, meet the polar bears or watch them live on the polar bear web cam.
I tried playing the Polar walk which teaches kids that the polar bears are running out of habitat because they are plunging into icy water. This is cool and the game is an easy game to play. The game keeps a running total of the top scores so there is motivation for some people to want to come back and play this game again.
I also tried the chinook’s beat the heat game and figured out that I suck at all video games.
You can log into a web cam to see live video of the polar bear exhibit at the zoo. Live video is never the same experience and this is a nice feature on this site.
There are stories about each of the polar bears on exhibit to let people connect with the animals. I looked at Kalluk, the athlete and learned that he weighs 950 pounds and is a playful polar bear.
These stories are fun and the goal is to engage people to contribute money.
I think that RED is a fun agency to watch and that they will come up with some really great projects in the future.
