Studio Exploration

Grip Limited

Grip Limited is an advertising agency based in Toronto that creates tv and radio spots as well as does strategy, branding, design, and integrated multimedia campaigns.

While their portfolio contains more traditional fare, it’s their own website that really stands out to me.  Instead of the usual vertical scrolling to web pages, this site has a horizontal layout with vertical columns.  The mouse is used to grab the page and or vertical columns to move up, down, left, or right.  Embedded within that web page are multiple video and audio clips, random statistics and links to client websites.  It’s a smorgasboard of information that’s unique and visually compelling. In addition, the links to different “pages” are seamless – scroll to a different part of the web page and the HTML link will automatically update based on your location within the page. While most web sites follow a similar design (vertical scrolling up and down), this website does not.

Each vertical column is a different category, including tv spots, facts, integrated campaigns, and website links. It’s worth noting that whenever a user plays a video or audio clip and then scrolls away, the audio gradually fades out.

Their apparent client list, draw from their studio web page, include Honda, Hyundai, Maynard’s Most Wanted Jelly Beans, eBay, Budweiser, Centrified General Accountants, Evra, Expedia, Guinness, Happy Planet Shots, Harry Rosen, Kokanee, Bell, Labatt USA, and Nabs. Their work is effective - their Budweiser and Honda commercials are well known and found to be humorous by most.
